FAQs
Do I still need insurance?
Direct Primary Care does NOT take the place of medical insurance. Medical insurance is needed to cover catastrophic injuries or illnesses which require hospitalization or surgery. Insurance can also be used for specialist visits, xrays and laboratory tests.
Do you accept Medicaid?
By law, Pence Pediatrics cannot accept Medicaid patients at this time. We will continue to work with state legislators in order to be able to accept Medicaid patients in the future. Please let us know if you would like to be put on our Medicaid wait list.
Do my membership dues qualify for my HSA?
Yes, DPC membership dues are considered a medical expense and not an insurance premium.
What ages do accept?
We see patients from birth through 21 years.
What if I decide to cancel my membership?
We understand that needs may change and we want to be supportive. Please note that a $150/patient fee will be required to re-register with our clinic.
Dr. Pence
Dr. Mikaila Heldt Pence, originally from the foothills just outside of Denver, has been serving the San Luis Valley community since 2011. She attended Mullen High School in Denver, received her Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry with minors in Biology, Physics in Medicine, Leadership, and Business as well as a Masters Degree in Physical Chemistry at the University of Denver. She completed medical school at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Pediatric Internship & Residency at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with specialty rotations at Children's Hospital Colorado in Denver.
She lives with her husband and 3 children in Monte Vista where they pasture raise Miniature Herefords for show, breeding stock & beef. When not in clinic you'll find her busy attending basketball and soccer games, track meets, cow shows, and 4H meetings. She enjoys camping and being at the lake with her family.
She is excited to offer an alternative to the corporate healthcare
system that has made healthcare complicated, inaccessible,
expensive and impersonal.

Our Consulting
Consultative visit upon referral from your primary care provider for pediatric specialty care.
Areas of consultation include but are not exclusive to behavioral or developmental differences, headaches, chronic ear infections, frequent illness, chronic cough, asthma, allergies, eczema, abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation with out without encoperesis, bedwetting, sleep trouble, excessive or
inadequate weight gain.
Fee for service with payment expected at
time of service.
